Police have detained model and actress Romana Islam Swarna on charges of embezzling more than Tk 1 crore from a Saudi expatriate businessman named Kamrul Islam. In the lawsuit, he accused her of marrying him by deception and swindling more than Tk 1 crore from him on different occasions showing various excuses. A Dhaka court on Friday ordered police to interrogate model and actress Romana Islam Swarna, 40, and two others for a day in jail gate in a fraud case. The two other accused are Swarna’s mother Ashrafi Islam Shelly, 60, and son Annafi, 20.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Mahmuda Akter passed the order as police produced the trio before the court and investigation officer and Mohammadpur Police Station Inspector Md Dulal Hossain pleaded to place them on five-day remand each. The defence counsel, however, argued for their bail. Earlier, Romana Swarna was arrested from Lalmatia area in the capital’s Mohammadpur Police Station on Thursday afternoon. A Saudi expatriate victim had filed a case against the actress with the Mohammadpur Police Station. The victim mentioned in the case that Swarna had embezzled more than crores of takas from him at different times by fraudulently married him. Mohammadpur police detained Swarna based on the allegation.
According to police sources, Romana Swarna mainly targeted expatriates and trapped them ‘in the name of love’ on Facebook. She embezzled millions of money from them in the pretext of ‘divorcee’ or ‘financial crisis in the family.’ The swindled Saudi expatriate got acquainted with Swarna on Facebook and maintained communication via Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. Each member of the family confessed to being involved in the incident during preliminary interrogation, police said. The victim expatriate, who was swindled by her, said Romana, at first, made a good relationship with him. She later embezzled Tk 1.90 crore from him in the name of buying a flat in the capital’s Lalmatia area.
“After I came to the country, she called me at home and made me unconscious, took obscene photos and even took a stamp from me. That’s how she forced me to marry her. It will be taradiddle if I say she divorced me. So, I took the shelter of police protection,” he added with a regret voice. The police said each member of the family made a huge amount of money by playing the same process of ‘love and marriage relationship’ with the opposite gender.
