Chattogram Port Authority has added a new dimension. A new four-lane road of 1.2 km has been constructed under this project. Adding a different dimension to the 460 meter two-lane flyover. Project Director, Engineer.
Mizanur Rahman Sarkar told media that the new road with flyover has been constructed to ensure maximum utilization of the space allotted for PCT and for the convenience of airport bound passengers. The road has already been made suitable for traffic. Hopefully, the authorities will launch it soon. He said that in December 2021, work is in full swing at PCT for handling containers and fuel oil. Authorities are working hard to start handling at least one jetty in June 2021. Other works including piling are being done using the latest technology in the form of New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) of the port. The PCT can accommodate 3 container vessels of 190 m length and 10 m draft and one edible oil vessel at the 220 m long Dolphin Jetty. The project under construction on 32 acres of land has a backup yard of 18 acres.
According to sources, the port authorities had to speed up the relocation of various government and non-government establishments including warehouses, customs, marine fisheries and oil tanks of private companies.
Meetings have been held time and time again and there has been more delay in sending letters.
But now there is no obstacle in the implementation of this project. So the activity has increased in the project. The terminal has 4 key gantry cranes , 6 rubber tiered gantry cranes , 4 straddle carriers, 4 rich stackers, 1 rail mounted gantry crane , 4 low-mast fork lifts, 2 fire trucks.
The port plans to have 3 security patrol cars, 1 ambulance, two 50-ton tug boats, 2 pilot boats and 2 first speed boats. The foundation stone of the project was laid on September 6, 2016.
It was informed at a meeting of Chattogram Port Authority and Public Private Partnership (PPP) Authority on November 18 in the cornference room of the Ministry of Shipping on the appointment of operators in the ‘Patenga Container Terminal’ project and the construction of ‘Bay Terminal’.
PCT construction project was undertaken to increase the container handling capacity of Chattogram port. The PCT will have a 563-meter-long container jetty with backup facilities, a 220-meter-long dolphin jetty for oil unloading, a 69,000-square-meter RCC yard, a 2,128-square-meter container customs station , a 2,150-meter long and 6 meters high customs bonded house, 1,500 meters of railway truck, 420 meters of flyover, 1,200 square meters of mechanical workshop and 5,570 square meters of office building. The construction of PCT has been estimated at Tk 1,126.56 crore for construction work, Tk 142 crore for railway works and Tk 498.70 crore for equipment. Its annual container handling capacity estimated at four lakh TEUs containers. The consturction of Patenga container terminal expected to be completed by June 2021. Various countries and organizations have expressed interest in the work of PCT operators. The meeting emphasized on formulating a timetable and action plan for hiring a consultant to conduct a feasibility study for the recruitment of terminal operators and the formation of a project team comprising PPP authorities, port sources said.
