City Desk :
Parliament members can play a vital role to create ‘active ageing society’ for senior citizens of their respective constituencies, Jatiya Sangsad Whip ASM Firoj has said at an international conference in Vietnam.
Firoj, who led a four member Bangladesh delegation there, said the parliamentarians should discuss the active ageing issue in their constituencies and raise awareness among all stakeholders.
He said the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has attached priority to the aging population in Bangladesh.
According to Word Health Organization (WHO), older people who retire from work, ill or live with disabilities can remain active contributors to their families, peers, communities and nations. Active ageing aims to extend healthy life expectancy and quality of life for all people as they grow old.
The word “active” refers to continuing participation in social, economic, cultural, spiritual and civic affairs, not just the ability to be physically active or to participate in the labour force, says WHO.
Other members of the parliamentary delegation are: Begum Fazilatunnesa, MP, Deputy Secretary MA Kamal Billah and Whip’s Personal Secretary Mohammad Barad Hossain Chowdhury.
