UNB, Dhaka :
Participants in a rally on Thursday demanded immediate action against those responsible for the demolition and occupation of a number of schools in the capital.
Bangladesh Chhata Union organised the rally in front of Siddheshwari Girls’ High School and College at Bailey Road in protest against the illegal occupation and demolition of 28 schools in the capital.
Teachers and students of 20 educational institutions, guardians, activists and educationists joined the rally to express their solidarity with the demand.
The speakers slammed the government for the recent demolition of Samajik Shikkha Kendra Government Primary School at Bailey Road and Champa-Parul Government Primary School in Mirpur.
Warning the government, they said a tougher movement will be launched if steps are not taken within September 17 to reestablish Samajik Shikkha Kendro Government Primary School and Champa-Parul Government Primary School.
Addressing the rally, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) general secretary Syed Abu Zafar Ahmed said, “Education can’t be commercialised. The government can’t make supermarkets destroying the schools.”
The destruction of education will ruin the country as well as the government, he opined.
After the rally, a procession was brought out that ended at Shantinagar crossing.
