Staff Reporter :
If senior Hefazat-e-Islam leaders were involved in sabotage during their protests programe, action will be taken against them, said Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed.
The leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam were not named in cases of violence filed by police and other individuals. Police have so far
named people who carried out violence staying on the spot, IGP said.
The police chief made the remarks while he was visiting policemen, wounded during the violence, at Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka on Wednesday.
The police boss said, “There is always controversy if anyone does any work in our country. We didn’t want anything like that to happen in this case. They don’t want to influence anything.
An investigation is underway. Action will be taken if the names of leaders or instructors are mentioned in the investigation findings. We won’t leave anyone out.”
However, the police chief could not confirm numbers of cases filed and people involved in the incident since some cases were under process to be lodged.
Benazir said the day we celebrated the golden jubilee of our independence, Hefazat carried out violence all over the country on March 26. They created violence first from Baitul Mukarram in Dhaka, then from Hathazari in Chittagong.
Our madrasa students have been used here. Madrasa students attacked Hathazari police station. They had attacked this police station earlier too. They also attacked land office. All the documents of the land office were torched. For this reason, the people of the region will suffer year after year, he said.
The IGP said that several policemen were critically wounded in the attack at Hathazari and Brahmanbaria. They abducted one of our trainee ASPs in Hathazari and took him away. He was later severely beaten. A DSB member was taken away. They were also beaten.
“Hefazat tried to tarnish the golden jubilee celebration,” he said.
At least 14 people were killed on Friday and Sunday as police attacked processions opposing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh. Hefazat, however, claimed at least 17 of their members were killed, over 500 injured and more than 200 arrested during the violence.
Nearly two dozen cases so far were filed against thousands of protesters in Brahmanbaria, Narayanganj and elsewhere over the violence.
