Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said, there is no time and passage to amend the newly passed Road Transport Act 2018 at least before the upcoming election, though the transport workers called for 48 hours strike.
We are rather advising the transport workers to withdraw the strike.
The Minister said it to the media in the secretariat on Tuesday.
It is noted that the Road Transport Act 2018 was passed by voice vote in the Parliament on September 19 after it was approved by the Cabinet on August 6 in view of the students protest demanding safe roads for all.
According to the newly passed law, death penalty can be sentenced to a driver if he is proved guilty of murder in a road accident.
For this reasons transport workers have rejected some provisions of the law and called a 48-hour countrywide strike on October 28 demanding amendment to the law.
Quader said, “Discussions were held with transport workers and leaders before passing the law. However, if necessary, changes can be made after the election when a new government will be formed.”
