A youth threw acid on Imam of Uttar Korapara mosque in Jhenidah Sadar upazila on Wednesday. The youth threw acid as the Imam performed and arranged the marriage of his (youth) sweet heart.
The Imam is Masum Hossain, 25 son of Moazzem Hossan of Korapara village of the upazila.
Locals and relatives said, Shamim Hossain, son of Badal Hossain of the same village threw acid at Imam when he came out of the mosque after performing Johr namaj.
Nur-Islam brother in law of the Imam said, Masum had been doing the job of a Imam in the mosque. On Wednesday noon at around 2-00 pm Masum was coming to his residence after performing Johr namaj. As soon as he came out of the Mosque Shamim threw acid at him. An elderly person Ishaq Ali who performed namaj with the Imam said, a youth abruptly threw acid when they came out of the mosque. The locals caught the rascal and beat up him. At last they handed over the youth to police.
Surgical doctor Apurbo Shah of Jhenidah sadar hospital told this correspondent that the Imam has got chemical burnt. He hag got burnt 20% of his left side of his mouth, left hand and chest. Jhenidah police station officer in charge Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury said, Shamim had given confessional statement to police that he (Shamim) had abducted a girl a few days back. But Masum had helped the guardians of the abducted girl to rescue her from the clutch of Masum.
