UNB, Dhaka :
Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Wednesday said it will not be difficult for Bangladesh to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the government is religiously and socially committed to implement the agenda. Bangladesh will surely be able to attain the goal of making Bangladesh a hunger and poverty-free country by 2030, he said while addressing a discussion with media people over SDGs in the city.
General Economic Division of the Planning Commission and UNDP jointly arranged the discussion titled “Implementation of SDGs and its Targets” at NEC conference room.
Noting that the development in Bangladesh in the last 7-8 years surprised the world, the minister said, “I believe that our GDP growth rate will reach close to 7.5 percent this fiscal.”
Chief Coordinator for SDGs affairs of the Prime Minister’s Office Abul Kalam Azad said it is not possible to achieve the SDGs without engaging people from all sectors, including the civil society members, academia and journalists in the implementation process as the SDGs is totality of development.
The Financial Express Editor AHM Moazzem Hossain said Bangladesh needs to focus on building institutions to implement the sustainable global agenda. “We don’t have lack of political commitments. But there is weakness in implementation. So, we need to build up institutions… the capacity of the
ministry should be increased,” he said. President of Jatiya Press Club Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman urged the government to let the media to work on its normal course so that they can play role in implementation of the sustainable agenda through constructive criticism. UNDP Country (Bangladesh) Representative Sudipto Mukherjee also spoke at the discussion presided over by GED member Dr Shamsul Alam. Making a presentation over Implementation of SDGs: Bangladesh Perspective, Dr Shamsul said 1-15 goals of the global agenda are found to be thematically fully aligned with the plan document of the Bangladesh government, while the remaining two goals are partially aligned.
