Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Wednesday submitted the chargesheet in the BUET student Abrar Fahad murder case accusing 25 students of the institution, all are reportedly BCL men.
Investigation Officer of the case, Inspector Md Wahiduzzaman, submitted the charge sheet in the general register office of the chief metropolitan magistrate court of Dhaka.
“Among the 25 accused, 19 are FIR named. 21 accused have been arrested in the meantime,” said Monirul Islam, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Wednesday in a press briefing.
He also said, “11 accused students were directly involved with the murder of Abrar. The remaining 14 accused were involved in different ways in the killing. So far 35 persons have been testified in the case. Abrar was brutally beaten from 10.00 pm to 2.00 am on the day of the incident.”
The 25 accused are Mehedi Hasan Rasel (civil engineering batch-13), Muhtasim Fuad (civil engineering batch-14), Anik Sarker (mechanical engineering batch-15), Mehedi Hasan Robin (chemical engineering batch-15), Ifti Mosharraf Hossain Shakal (biomedical engineering batch-16), Moniruzzaman Monir (water resources engineering bath-16), Meftahul Islam Zion (naval architecture and marine engineering batch-15), Mazedur Rahman (materials and metallurgical engineering batch-17), Muzahidur Rahman Muzahid (Electronic and Electrical Engineering batch-16), Tabakhkharul Islam Tanvir (mechanical engineering batch-16), Hossain Mohammad Toha (mechanical engineering batch-17), Jisan (Electronic and Electrical Engineering batch-16), Md Akash (civil engineering batch-16), Md Shamim Billah (naval architecture and marine engineering batch-17), Nazmus Sadat (mechanical engineering batch-17), Ajtesamul Rabbi Tanim (civil engineering batch-17), Morshed Amartya Islam (mechanical engineering batch-17), Muaz Abu Huraira (computer science and engineering batch-17), Muntasir Alam Jemi (mechanical engineering batch-17), Amit Shaha (civil engineering batch-16), Muztaba Rafid (chemical engineering batch-16), Istiaq Hasan Munna (mechanical engineering batch-15), Samsul Arefin Rafat (mechanical engineering batch-17), and Mizanur Rahman (water resources engineering batch-16) and Mahadul Setu (chemical engineering batch-14).
Abrar Fahad, a second-year-student of the university’s electrical and electronic engineering department, was beaten to death allegedly by some BCL leaders between 10.00 pm on October 6 and 2:00 am on October 7 this year.
The incident triggered a firestorm of protests on campuses across the country. Many took to the social media to demand justice for Abrar.
Law enforcers suspect that Abrar was attacked because of one of his recent Facebook posts, which seemed critical of some recent deals with India.
Later, Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 with the Chawkbazar Police Station.
In the yesterday’s briefing, Monirul Islam, said, “The accused would always create a fearsome environment in the BUET campus in the name of ragging. The killers would torture some people if they did not greet them with a ‘salam’ or smile at them so that other students got the message.”
“They also made some junior students to work as their orderlies. The suspects also used their political identity as a shelter,” Monirul said.
He further said hall and university authorities could have been a little more careful.
“Although this did not come up as part of the investigation, after judging and observing the entire incident, we still think that hall authorities have showed some lax behaviour,” Monirul added.
