The BNP on Thursday termed the Anti-Corruption Commission’s appeal to High Court to increase party chief Khaleda Zia’s punishment on Zia Orphanage Trust case illegal. “There is not any law in ACC to submit such a review petition to increase any body’s punishment. The ACC’s petition to increase Khaleda Zia’s jail term is totally unlawful and politically motivated,” BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said this at a news briefing at the party’s central office in the city’s at Nayapaltan.
The BNP leader accused the Election Commission to act as blind and deaf person since it kept silent after the ruling Awami League’s candidates involved in vote rigging in the on-going Union Council and Municipal elections in Comilla, Tangail and Chittagong areas.
BNP Vice-Chairmen Shawkat Mahmud and Nitai Roy Chowdhury, and Assistant Organising Secretary Abdus Salam Azad, among others, were present.
Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir could not meet the party’s imprisoned chairperson Khaleda Zia on Thursday due to her illness.
Fakhrul was scheduled to meet Khaleda Zia at Old Dhaka Central Jail at 3:00pm at Nazimuddin Road.
On the way, Mirza Fakhrul was informed that Khaleda Zia is ill so his visit to BNP chairperson was postponed. BNP chairperson’s press wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan told this to a group of journalists quoting Mirza Fakhrul as saying.
