Illegal wealth: ACC yet undecided about suing MP Enamul, wife

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is reportedly procrastinating in filing a case against Mohammad Enamul Haque, MP, from Rajshahi Constituency-4, and his wife Tahura Haque, who allegedly earned a huge wealth in dishonest ways, on account of division of opinion between two commissioners.
ACC Deputy Director and Investigation Officer Jatan Kumar Roy submitted a probe report to the Commissioner (Inquiry) Dr Nasiruddin Ahmed September 16 this year, seeking permission to file a case against the MP and his wife on. After scrutiny, the Commissioner approved it. But when it was placed to Commissioner Shahabuddin Chuppu (Investigation), he differed and ordered to send the file to the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
In view of legal dispute between two commissioners, ACC Chairman M Badiuzzaman held separate meetings with the them but could not reach any decision.
Shahabuddin Chuppu admitted to the journalists about his meeting with the chairman about the issue.
He said, the Commission could not still take the final decision about the matter. “Dr Nasiruddin Ahmed approved of filing a case but I did not do it, as the probe report suggested that the MP evaded tax also. I think, the matter should be investigated by the NBR.
The ACC chairman told the journalists that the Commission did not take final decision about Enamul Haque. It will be taken soon. Meanwhile, the Investigation Officer, who has gone on retirement, lodged a general diary against Enamul Haque with Ramna Thana in the city on September 10 that he threatened if dire consequences if case was filed.
The MP and his wife own 14 business entities, including Ena Properties, Saleha-Imarat Cold Storage, Ena Dunga Leasing, Northern Power Solution Ltd, Ena International, Ena Cars, Ena Energy Ltd, Amader Rajshahi, Saleha Emarath Foundation, Ena Building Product Ltd and Saleha-Emarat Agricultural Industry Ltd.
Sources said, the Commission probe team detected Tk 213.80 crore in the MP’s name and Tk 49 crore in his wife’s name earned illegal ways.
On March 9 this year, the Commission served notices to them seeking their wealth statements.
Later they submitted the statements stating, they have wealth of Tk 8.34 crore.
