Farmers Bank's Chisty to face music: ACC to sue Regent’s Shahed for embezzlement

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is going to file a case against Regent Hospital chairman Md Shahed and four others for stealing Tk Tk 1.51 crore and filed a separate case against former audit committee chairman of erstwhile Farmers Bank Ltd, (now Padma Bank) Mahbubul Haque Chisty and five others for embezzling Tk 63 crore on Tuesday.
Regent Hospital’s Shahed embezzled that cash from NRB Bank Limited.
The other three persons were Regent Hospital Managing Director Ibrahim Khalil, NRB Bank’s former Principal Officer Md Sohanur Rahman, and its Vice-President Wahid Bin Ahmed. ACC Director (Public relations) Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya said the anti-graft body in a meeting took the decision of filing the case against four persons on charges of embezzling Tk 1.51 crore.
ACC Assistant Director Sirajul Islam will lodge the case soon with its integrated district office in Dhaka-1, Pranab added.
Furthermore, Shahjahan Meraz, Deputy Assistant Director of ACC, lodged the case against Chishty and five others at the Integrated District Office (Dhaka-1).
The five others are Bakshiganj Jute Spinners Ltd Managing Director Md. Rashedul Haque Chishty, Padma Bank’s suspended Executive Vice-President Mohammad Jahangir Alam Majumder, Al-Farooq Bags Ltd Chairman Chowdhury Al Farooq, its Managing Director Redwanul Kabir Chowdhury and the company’s Director Kabir Chowdhury.
Earlier on Monday, the anti-graft body approved the case against the six people at the commission’s regular meeting
ACC found that the accused in collusion with one another stole Tk 40.79 crore from Farmers Bank’s Motijheel Branch violating rules and embezzled the money. The total outstanding amount is Tk 62.96 crore along with interest as on December 31, 2019.
