Chairman of Anti-Corruption Commission Iqbal Mahmood on Tuesday said, the commission has taken decision to investigate the allegation of illegal stockpiling of foods by hoarders, managing a section of food officials.
“The ACC has already received many allegations against a section of food officials. They allegedly took undue advantages from some hoarders over the illegal stockpiling of foods. That is why we have decided to probe the matter,” the chairman said at a discussion titled “Corruption-Free Public Services: Nature of Graft Allegation” held in Rangamati DC Office Conference Room.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Rangamati Md Manzarul Mannan presided over the discussion while ACC Secretary Dr Md Shamsul Arefin spoke at the programme as the special guest.
“We will also form a probe committee in this regard soon,” the ACC chief said.
“Exemplary legal actions will be taken against the unscrupulous government officials and hoarders involved in illegal stockpiling of foods with a view to increasing rice price to embezzle people’s money,” he said.
Mahmood said, “There is no alternative to defy the law. Every citizen should obey the law to establish the rule of law in the country. We should remember that none of us is above the law.”
The government officials are appointed to play important role in delivering services to the people (at the local level). But, we are hurt when the people are lodging complaints against the government officials. It is also very unfortunate,” he said.
Earlier in the morning, the ACC chairman inaugurated the commission’s newly constructed four-storey Rangamati coordinated district office at a cost of Tk 3.5 cr.
“The commission’s own building will play a vital role in ensuring security to its employees, accused and witnesses and preserving official data and seized evidences,” he said.
