ACC sues suspended GCC mayor Mannan on graft charge

UNB, Dhaka :The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday filed a case against suspended mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) and another for allegedly swindling about Tk 50 lakh from the city corporation.ACC deputy director Md Shamsul Alam filed the case against GCC mayor Prof Abdul Mannan and its accounts officer Md Golam Kibria with Joydebpur Police Station in Gazipur, Commission’s public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told UNB. Earlier, in 2015, the ACC initiated a probe against them after it received an allegation that a huge amount of money was misappropriated from the relief fund of the city corporation.According to first information report (FIR), the GCC’s relief fund had Tk 1.03 crore when Prof Abdul Mannan was the city mayor during August 2013 to February 2015. Over Tk 90 lakh was shown as distributed among the beneficiaries through vouchers from the fund. Although many vouchers did not have signatures of the beneficiaries, the mayor approved these vouchers violating rules.During the ACC probe, it has been found that Prof Abdul Mannan and accounts officer Golam Kibria in collusion with each other plundered about Tk 50 lakh from the GCC’s relief fund preparing 999 fake vouchers, FIR said. The national anti-corruption agency filed the case under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1947.
