The BNP has said that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is now ‘graft-protection commission’, as it pursues a one-eyed policy to save the leaders of ruling Awami League from corruption charge.
Addressing a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the city on Wednesday, BNP’s spokesman and its International Affairs Secretary Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon alleged the ACC failed to come out of the grip of ruling party to perform neutrally and impartially.
“The ACC suddenly decided not to continue the graft case against Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, who had been convicted. On the other hand, it is continuing two cases against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia despite lawyers’ repeated appeals to withdraw the cases. The ACC is now playing one-eyed policy role,” he said.
He further said that the ACC has also decided not to continue graft cases against about 300 ruling party men. The commission is working to encourage the ruling party men in corruption and graft, he added.
He urged the ACC not to tarnish its image further by pursuing dual policy in dealing with corruption. “If you want to withdraw the cases against ministers and ruling party men, you will have to follow in case of BNP leaders and activists. It recommends only for withdrawal of the cases filed against ruling party men, but not against our leaders and activists,” Dr Ripon said.
He came down heavily on ACC Commissioner M Sahabuddin Chuppu for what he said his controversial activities. The BNP leader said the commissioner has decided to discontinue the case against Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya in a meeting held in absence of ACC Chairman. “I want to ask him whether did he act on the Constitution or not,” he said.
About sacked minister and Awami League presidium member Abdul Latif Siddique’s bail, the BNP leader said, the government has chosen the holy month of Ramzan thinking that people will not wage any movement in this month against it. ‘We want punishment of the AL leader for his anti- Islamic comments,” he said.
