Aims to check graft: ACC launches campaign over public hearing

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday launched an anti-corruption campaign in the capital urging the people of all professionals to raise their voice against corruption.
The Commission also requested them to participate in its public hearing in the city to be held on December 10.
Commissioner of the ACC Dr Nasir Uddin Ahmed inaugurated the pre-public hearing campaign at the commission’s head office in the afternoon.
Earlier, the ACC’s National Anti-Graft Body has decided to hold the public hearing at Osmani Memorial Auditorium on services provided by the Assistant Commissioners and Sub-registrars’ offices of Tejgaon, Gulshan, Katwali and Sutrapur areas on December 10.
The residents of the capital, who have the bitter experiences of sufferings in availing themselves of services from those offices, can take part in
the public hearing to raise their allegations against the government officials responsible for that.
With a view to ensuring the participation of common people, the ACC is carrying out the pre-public hearing campaign involving several horse carts to distribute leaflets and using loudhailers to attract people to the public hearing.
During the campaign, people will be requested to register their names in the ACC’s head office or its Dhaka divisional office or members of local Corruption Prevention Committees before December 7 next to take part in the hearing.
The commission has arranged public hearings in different government offices to ensure transparency and accountability among the public servants to provide services to the people, ACC Chairman M Bodiuzzaman said.
“Public Hearing is the commission’s new initiative to fight corruption. If after this initiative the government officials do not change their mentality, the ACC will not hesitate to take action against the corrupt officials, he said.
The negligence and corruption of some unscrupulous government officials were barring people from getting the proper services they seek, he added.
ACC Commissioner Dr Nasir Uddin Ahmed said an anti-corruption social movement will be created across the country by making people aware about the adverse impacts of graft.
He said posters and leaflets distribution will continue till December 7 next in the respective areas of the city to inform people about the public hearing.
Public hearings were earlier held in Mymensingh, Savar and Cox’s Bazar, the ACC commissioners said now another is going to be held in the capital.
The public hearing is being arranged as part of the Commission’s prevention activities being carried out following the Anti Corruption Commission Act 2004 and the National Integrity Strategy.
