Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Iqbal Mahmood on Tuesday admitted that the Commission itself is violating law since it cannot complete its probes within the time given by the Anti Corruption Commission Act 2004.
“The Commission is supposed to complete an inquiry within 30 days as
per the law, but sometimes the probe is not finished in four years, and even in 10 years. This is why a change should be brought within the Commission,” he told a views-exchange meeting at the ACC’s conference room. The national anti-graft agency arranged the views-exchange meeting with the civil society members to discuss its draft strategic work plan 2016-17.
Mahmood said there are so many allegations against the ACC and it is taking all the allegations positively. “We can’t demonstrate our strength and capability in performing duties due to complications in its (ACC) system, and people have no desired faith in the Commission…you have to consider our circumstances,” he said. “So”, the ACC chief said, “The Commission is exchanging views with the people of all strata to prepare an effective strategic work plan for the anti-graft agency.”
He said, corruption has now spread everywhere pushing the country towards darkness. So, the ACC has targeted the 85 lakh students studying at secondary level to motivate them to raise their voice against corruption and keep themselves free from the widespread social menace. Mahmood, however, warned that the chain of corruption will be dealt with strongly for the welfare of the country’s future generation.
“One day the truth will be revealed. Corrupt people will be punished. To control the chain of graft, we need governance first,” he added. ACC commissioners Dr Nasiruddin Ahmed and AFM Aminul Islam, former chairman of the ACC Ghulam Rahman, former chief information commissioner Muhammad Zamir, former cabinet secretary Ali Imam Majumder, Sujan secretary Badiul Alam Majumder and local government expert Dr Tofail Ahmed, among others, spoke at the meeting.
