Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Sunday said that the Anti-Corruption Commission had so far failed to draw conclusions in 73 percent allegations of corruptions.
The ACC is unable to investigate corruption charges independently against influential persons.
“It cannot be said that the ACC was working against the influential suspects independently, especially those who are involved in banking sector’s scams,” said Ifekharuzzman, the Executive Director of TIB.
He told it while publishing its research papers on ACC’s functions at its (TIB) head office in the city.
He stressed that ACC must take steps against influential persons to prove that it was holding inquiries against them independently.
The ACC has legal instruments and power to act independently, he added.
“But it cannot do it for lack a strong and visionary leadership,” said the TIB chief.
Replying to a query, Iftekhar said some dishonest officials of the then Bureau of Anti-Corruption were involved in corruptions and later, removing the bureau the ACC was formed as per the Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2004 to make it free from corruption.
TIB executive director said, “But the Bureau officials were included in ACC and that is why the problem still remains in the body.”
He said also, “We often get allegations that the ACC officials are involved in corruption as well.”
“Therefore, we cannot say right now that the ACC is a clean agency. But the national’s only anti corruption body is working to make it a clean one as it is taking actions against its officials getting involved in graft,” he said.
The TIB published their research papers on ‘ACC conducted public hearings: effectiveness and what to do’ entitled report.
Iftekharuzzaman termed it positive to make conclusions of 27 percent cases though all of them were not found effective.
Md. Wahid Alam, Rezaul Karim and Muhammad Shahidul Islam presented the research papers.
