Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Iqbal Mahmud said on Saturday that people should stand against the corrupt ones right now as their arrogance has crossed the limit.
He made the remarks in the discussion as part of the Commission’s celebration of the International Anti-Corruption Day with the theme ‘Come: Get united against the corrupt’ at the auditorium of the Jatiya Natyashala of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
ACC Chairman Iqbal Mahmud said everyone should play the role to
build corruption-free society for the future generation of the country. Terming corruption as a kind of addiction, the Chairman said, “Those who earn money illegally can’t enjoy it. Corrupt people do not understand this. The money that is corrupted – they can’t enjoy the resources they store due to health reason, and ageing.”
“Their whole job is just an addiction. They are addicted for money and power. Because of these two addictions, we are seeing the bank loots, transactions of bribe money in government works, grafts in business, and leak of question papers. In a word, their arrogance has exceeded.”
Urging all to eradicate the corrupt, Iqbal Mahmud said, “We can’t push our country to a bleak future. We want to overthrow these corrupt people and give a lesson to the corrupt. This work can’t be done alone by ACC. All people of the society have to get united against the corruption to ensure a corruption-free society for the next generation.”
Prominent writer Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal said “You do not have to run behind money. You will see – if you are good, if you are eligible, then money will turn back on you.”
Chairman of the Commission inaugurated the event and a mass signature programme to raise awareness against graft practices. The mass signature programme will continue until December 14.
Besides, a human chain led by its Chairman and Commissioners was formed in the morning where officials and employees of the head office and Dhaka Divisional Office, panel lawyers of the Commission, members of Dhaka City Anti- Corruption Committee, Girls Guide, Boys Scout, Ansar and BNCC members took part.
Human chains, discussions, documentary screening, and cultural programmes were arranged in districts and upazilas across the country as part of the celebration.
ACC started to observe the day since 2007 while the United Nations declared the December 9 as International Anti-Corruption Day’ in 2003. The cabinet of the Bangladesh government approved observing the 9th December as the International Anti-Corruption Day on July 10 this year.
