Gazi Md. Abdur Rashid :
Secondary education is the second level of our National Education System. The basis and quality of the central level of human resources is created, and higher education depends mainly on Secondary Level Education.
The responsibility of the government is to ensure the quality of education and to make necessary arrangements for it. Since the introduction of modern secondary education from the British era, school inspection system was introduced to improve the quality of school education and to provide donations.
However, during this period inspection meant administrative inspection. At present, the name of the inspection system has been given to the academic supervision. The importance of academic supervision for the improvement of quality of teaching in the classroom is undeniable. This fundamental education program guided the development of the quality of education, and this tribute was done periodically from the head of the educational institution and with the help of senior teachers and subject teachers.
According to behavioural scientists, the educational behaviour of the educational institution which helps in educating students and achieving the objectives of education is academic. Academic supervision is meant behaviour officially designated by the organization that directly affects teachers, behaviour in such a way as to facilitate pupils learning and achieves the goals of organization.
The main objective of the academic supervision is to help the organization to achieve the goal of human resource development by evaluating the effectiveness of the teaching process that teachers use for teaching in the classroom. Changes in the syllabus are also being added to new ideas. Education materials are being made. Together the concept of teacher’s training is also changing. Varieties of class teaching methods have been used to apply techniques and use of educational materials. Many contemporary events are influencing students. Their minds are naturally attracted to changes outside the classroom. In this situation, there is a need for the theory of education to establish the quality of education. Regardless of the fact that academic supervisor influences teachers, not directly on the student.
However, the result of the theory of dividend has influenced the student. In general, the impact of academic supervision on the achievement of the activities of the organization is immense. As a result of academic supervision, an overall picture of the leadership of the institution’s head of the organization, the number of teachers, the number of students, the results, the other infrastructure development, teacher’s teaching quality, co-curricular activities, and the students’ spontaneous participation in class activities is very easily seen.
An academic supervisor is working on all the Upazilas / Thana secondary education offices in Bangladesh. Since the academic supervisors directly supervised the academic activities, the importance of this position is very significant. As a result of academic supervision, all the activities of educational institutions are closely monitored. If there is any type of defect, it can be immediately given an effective feedback. After evaluating the professional-based skill of the teacher and observing the student’s class activities, the academic supervisor presented a proper evaluation report to the senior authority.
At present, the government has taken necessary steps to improve the quality of secondary education and expansion of education facilities. With this management, the academic supervisor is working as a fruitful follower to ensure the quality of education of secondary educational institutions. Across the world’s advanced education system, the academic supervision is recognized and the importance of academic supervision is given due importance.
Co-curricular activities: Physical and mental development of the students
In order to successfully implement the objectives of the curriculum, various types of curricular activities are called co-curricular activities. To achieve the aims and objectives of education, the classroom learning transfer process is not enough. That is why for classroom lessons; practical life-based activities are required, such as discussion, debate, literary writing, science-club, music, drama, dance and various types of sports.
We must always remember that the goal of education is to develop a student’s overall personality. For this, Plato told about 2,500 years ago, ÔÔ Grammatic for the mind, gymnastic for body and music for the soul.” It is understood from Plato that the full development of the personality of the student needs to be done in addition to mentality as well as body practice and music practice.
The importance of co-curricular activities is presented below. 1. Co-curricular activities help the students to be aware and experienced in real life’s duties and responsibilities, 2. It makes conscious about the ongoing socio-economic and cultural environment of the country and to adapt to this environment, 3. It develops leadership qualities of students, 4. It encourages participants to cooperate, 5. Encourages teamwork too, 6. Raises discipline and teaches leadership to be loyal to the need, 7. It helps in attaining practical work, 8. The social customs teach to follow and the development of incompetent character, 9. Effectively teaches how passing leisure time, 10. Independent life and career support, 11. Those qualities that do not develop in the educational work, they develop in the co-curricular activities, 12 Emphasizes the importance of the expansion of creative knowledge of students and the use of science and technology.
Co-curricular activities are relevant to the education, culture, current socio-economic environment and situation of the country and nation and a positive attitude. Various organizations can have different types of co-curricular activities in accordance with material, human and financial facilities. But of course, it will be in line with the mental and physical preparation of education of the students.
It should be remembered that any educational activity should start from this place where the student is staying. That is to say that with the knowledge of previous event and experience of the students, new education programs should be started. The subject matter of recitation, drama, lecture etc. is to be selected according to the education and age of the students. If the students are involved with co-curricular activities, they can avoid any kind of negative thinking, develop a sense of health, develop an emotional spirit, develop creative attempts, develop leadership qualities, and enlighten family, society and state like illuminated stars ,
The present government has instructed to take highly effective measures for the successful implementation of co-curricular activities in educational institutions.
