‘Academic activities of BOU to be expanded’

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said the government has aimed at expanding academic activities of Bangladesh Open University (BOU) to offer an opportunity of education to the irregular students and the people engaged in different professions.
“Open university has already played an important role in providing education to the irregular students and the people of different ages…. The people who were forced to stop their studies due to various reasons, now they are getting the opportunity of continuing their studies, he said this on Wednesday while speaking at the fourth convocation of BOU in Gazipur.
Chairman of the University Grants Commission(UGC) of Bangladesh Prof Dr AK Azad Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor of National University Prof Dr Harun-or-Rashid, teachers and senior officials of different organizations, among others, addressed the convocation with BOU Vice Chancellor Dr MA Mannan in the chair.
Nahid said, “At present, nearly six lakh student are studying in the BOU and we are planning to double the figure within next five years to ensure accesses of the people to education.”
The country witnessed a notable progress in the field of education in the past couple of years as the present government made its best efforts to bring a positive and meaningful change in the entire education sector, he added.
Alongside the expansion of education, the minister sought cooperation of all to improve quality of education to create skilled workforce to build a happy and prosperous Bangladesh.
