Detective Branch (DB) of Police on Friday arrested an Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) member from the city’s Kamalapur
Railway Station area on charge of his involvement in the murders of Jagriti Prokashoni Publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan and blogger Niladri Chatterjee Niloy.
The arrested man has been identified as Khairul Islam alias Jamil alias Rifat alias Fahim alias Jisan, 24.
After police produced him in the court on Saturday, Metropolitan Magistrate Delwar Hossain placed Khairul on a five-day remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Joint-Commissioner Abdul Baten said this in a press briefing at DMP Media Center on Saturday afternoon.
Khirul participated in the murders of Dipan and Niloy as per the instruction of the neo-JMB leader Major (sacked) Syed Ziaul Haque, the Joint- Commissioner said.
During primary interrogation, Khairul, a member of ABT Intelligence Unit, explained his role in the killings.
Abdul Baten termed Khairul as a top leader of Ansar al-Islam, saying he joined ABT in 2013 and within a year he met the outfit’s big brother Zia, a sacked army major for his involvement in a failed coup in December, 2011.
The ABT man was assigned to collect information about Dipan and Niloy in eight months from January and he reported it to Major Zia who ordered his operational wing to execute the killings.
Abdul Baten continued, “Seeing CCTV footage, Khairul has identified four persons involved in blogger and secular writer Avijit killing and we are analysing the information.”
As the leader of the ABT, Maj Zia played a vital role in the killings, the police official said.
On September 26, Khairul met Zia alias Eshtiaq on the outskirts of Dhaka, he added.
Zia is the head of the military operations of the ABT who failed to orchestrate a coup in 2011. Since then, he has been on the run and police announced a Tk 20 lakh bounty on him.
On October 31 last year, Dipan was hacked to death in his office at Aziz Super Market in Dhaka’s Shahbagh area on broad daylight. ABT had claimed responsibility of the murder. Blogger Niloy also was hacked to death on August 7 in 2015 at his residence.
