Human rights activist Sultana Kamal has said the road accidents are on the rise due to the absence of good governance and accountability of the concerned authorities.
She came up with the allegation while addressing a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Friday, organised by Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity.
“Road accidents have become a common phenomenon in the country and it kills more people than any epidemic. The government, transport owners and workers are responsible for this,” said Sultana Kamal.
She also highlighted mismanagement of the government and the transport owners for the rising road accidents in the country.
“Even none of us is performing duty from his/her position. The responsibility and the blame are always put on the shoulders of others. We do not try to find out what causes accidents,” said Sultana Kamal.
She also said that safety of the passengers must be ensured through performing duties by the government, law enforcers and transport owners regardless of their position.
“If someone goes outside home, family members have to wait with uncertainty whether he or she will come back alive. Why do we have to pass through such uncertainty?” She questioned.
Speaking at the programme, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal leader Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal, MP, blamed the VIPs for violating the traffic rules and said the traffic laws are being violated by the people who formulate these.
