Monirul Islam, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), on Monday said that Bangladesh University of Engineering Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad was beaten to death on suspicion of an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir.
“Nineteen accused have so far been arrested in connection with the killing. Of them, four gave confessional statements. They confessed to killing Abrar Fahad on suspicion of his involvement in Shibir politics,” Monirul, chief of the DMP’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, said this at a press briefing held at the DMP Media Centre on Monday.
He said, “After the full investigation, we will be able to confirm whether he was beaten with the intention of murder. Investigation will clarify if BUET student Abrar Fahad’s murder was pre-planned.”
Monirul said, “We will complete our investigation before the deadline fixed for us by the lower court and then, the whole truth will be unveiled.”
He also said that the investigation in Abrar murder will be ended by the first week of November and the Detective Branch (DB) of Police will submit the chargesheet by the same month.
Replying to a query about police patrol in BUET area on the fateful night of incident, Monirul said, “Police need permission from the authorities to enter the BUET campus. Later, a team was patrolling in the area till 3:00am. But they did not hear any kind of screaming.
Abrar Fahad, 21, a second year student of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of BUET, was beaten to death by Bangladesh Chhatra League at his dormitory Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of October 7.
The incident sparked mass protests among students of BUET and other universities across the country, leading to BUET authorities banning student politics on the campus.
