National Vitamin A Plus Campaign: About 33.55 lakh children given Vitamin A capsules in 3 dists

Over 25.91 lakh babies were administered Vitamin ‘A’ Plus capsules in the first round of National Vitamin A Plus Campaign-2019 that observed in all eight districts under Rajshahi division on Saturday like other parts of the country.
Of the total children, around 2.8 lakh aged between six to 11 months were fed one blue colour Vitamin-A capsule each, while around 23.10 lakh babies aged between 12 to 59 months fed red color capsules.
While talking to journalists on Saturday, Dr Gopendra Nath Acharya, divisional director of health, said the campaign was observed everywhere in the division successfully.
He says various problems including eyesight and night blindness has been prevented and cured through successful implementation of the campaign for the last couple of years in the country.
Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) AHM Khairuzzaman Liton opened the city level campaign through administering capsule to some of the enlisted babies in the city bhaban premises on Saturday.
The programme was conducted in 384 centres including 343 permanent and 41 mobile ones in the city.
RCC officials said around 7,937 children aged between six months and 11 months were given blue-coloured capsule of high powered Vitamin A and 54,731 children aged between one year and five given red-coloured capsule of high-powered Vitamin A in the city.
Talking to BSS on the issue, RCC Chief Health Officer Dr Anzuman Ara Begum said the vitamin ‘A’ plus supplement is helpful for reducing the severity and duration of illnesses associated with pneumonia and diarrhea.
She also said vitamin ‘A’ supplement is essential for the normal functioning of the visual system, maintenance of cell function for growth, red blood cell production, immunity and reproduction.
The supplementation is also important for substantial reduction of death rate caused by diarrhoea and measles.
Besides, various problems including eyesight and night blindness could be prevented and cured through successful implementation of the campaign, Dr Anjuman Ara added.
BSS from Rangpur adds : Around 3.55 lakh under five children (6 to 59 months) were fed with Vitamin A Plus capsules in the district on Saturday as a part of the National Vitamin A Plus Campaign (first round) -2019.
“The National Vitamin A Plus Campaign (first round) was conducted successfully in all 77 unions under eight upazilas, three municipalities and Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) area in the district,” Civil Surgeon Dr. Abu Md. Zakirul Islam said today.
Earlier, Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Md. Mostafa Khaled Ahmed inaugurated the campaign by administering Vitamin A Plus capsules to some under-five children at Dakshin Mominpur Community Clinic in Sadar upazila in the morning.
Civil Surgeon Dr. Abu Md. Zakirul Islam, Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr. Kaniz Sabiha and Sadar Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Rabi Sankar Mandal were present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, Panel Mayor of Rangpur Mahmudur Rahman Titu inaugurated the campaign at the permanent immunization centre of RpCC by feeding a Vitamin A Plus capsule to an under-five child.
The Civil Surgeon said over 3.55-lakh under five children (6 to 59 months), including 37,863 children (6 to 11 months) and three lakh 17 thousand and 974 children (12 to 59 months), were to be immunised with Vitamin A Plus capsules across the district.
“A total of 3,664 volunteers, 697 health workers and 565 family welfare assistants worked at 1,832 outreach centres from 8 am to 4 pm and special steps were taken at bus stands, rail stations and other places during the campaign,” he said.
Vitamin A is crucial to increase disease resistant capacities of under-five children, reduce their death risks and prevent night blindness and other diseases to ensure their normal growth, he added.
BSS from Khulna reports: The first round of Vitamin A Plus campaign was observed here on Saturday as part of the nationwide programme.
Mayor of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Talukder Abdul Khaleque inaugurated the campaign in the city’s Amira Banu Begum Maternity Ward area as the chief guest through administering Vitamin A Plus capsule to a child.
Under the programme, all children will be administered Vitamin A Plus capsules, he added.
Chaired by KCC Councilor Abul Kalam Azad, the programme was addressed, among others, by Civil Surgeon Dr A S M Abdur Razzak, Councilors Md Moniruzzaman, Munsi Abdul Wadud and Arif Hossain Mithu, Women councilors Konoka Saha, Mazeda Khatun and Lutfunnecha Lutfa, assistant secretary of Health Ministry Rafiqul Islam, deputy director of Khulna Health Department Dr Sayed Zahangir Hossain and deputy director of family planning division Abdul Alim. About 1,57,385 babies aged under 12-59 months administered Vitamin A capsules in Khulna .
