Mass arrest continues across the country despite the political parties appeal to stop it in the interests of a free and fair election fow which the whole country and the world are waiting fervently.
More than 290 leaders and activists, working with the election symbol of Sheaf of Paddy to get substantial seats in the election were arrested in last two days.
Sources said that about 103 were arrested in Narayanganj, 70 in Rajshahi, 34 in Chattogram and 17 in Faridpur, by the law enforcement agencies. In Gazipur, at least eight BNP workers, including candidate Fazlul Haque Milon have been detained in separate cases since Wednesday night and Thursday.
Police arrested Milon, President of Gazipur BNP, from Kaliganj upazila’s Bartul area around 3:00pm.
The Police Super said that the BNP leader had arrest warrant against him in seven cases filed with different police stations in Dhaka.
Talking to media, Shakhwat Hossain, Joint Secretary of the BNP Unit, said that Milon had got bail in all those cases.
But Awami League men had been “warning him” against going to the constituency, he said, adding police even raided his home in Dhaka a few days ago.
Law enforcers in Gazipur also arrested two local BNP leaders in Bhangnahati area of Sreepur upazila in cases filed for sabotage.
In Narayanganj, around 103 activists were arrested by law enforcement when they were holding a meeting in Pagla of the district.
In Rajshahi, police arrested around 70 activists including Rajshahi district Jamaat Amir on Friday morning.
He was identified as Maqbool Hossain, (55) with charge of sabotage from Puthia.
Assistant Superintendent of Police of the district Abdur Razzak Khan confirmed the news to media.
In Chattogram, at least 34 people were picked up in connection with the incident ysterday.
Witnesses and police said law enforcers raided the house of a BNP leader, Abdul Mabud, who owns several houses of a tin-shed colony in the area, and arrested him in a case filed for sabotage.
In Tangail, a court sent Mir Julfikar Shamim, General Secretary of Sakhipur Krishak Sramik Janata League, to jail yesterday, a day after he had been arrested in a case filed for planning subversive activities.
In Faridpur, at least 17 BNP and Jamaat men were arrested for “sabotage” in separate drives in the last two days, said police.
In Jessore , at least three more activists including a Chairman of Union were arrested by the police on Friday.
Chairman was identified as Ataur Rahman ,Joint Secretary of BNP unit.
Sub-Inspector of Chougachha Police Station Atikul Islam confirmed the news to media.
In Kurigram, at least six more activists including an Ameer of Roumari upazila Jamaat were arrested by the police on Friday. The Ameer was identified as Moulana Shamsul Alam,55,
Senior Assistant Superintendent of police of the district Shahid Suhrawardy told the matter to media.
In Sirajganj , police arrested three BNP leaders in Belkuchi upazila of the district.
In Satkhira, police arrested 54 people from different parts of the district on Thursday on various charges.
