Rampant arrest of leaders and activists of opposition parties, including the BNP, continues across the country, sending the party men to hide instead of joining in polls race.
About 2700 leaders and activists, including a BNP candidate Fazlul Haque Milon, were arrested in last 10 days so that they wont be able to take part in the polls campaign.
Many election campaign offices had been vandalized. Yet CEC demands that congenial environment has been created for the upcoming 11th JS election. The CEC doesn’t play any role to stop violence.
In these circumstances, Dr Kamal Hossain, Chief of Jatiya Oikyafront has requested all not to leave polls race.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that they had never seen such an farce approach to election before. What a strange Election Commission it is! They have eyes but cannot see. They are completely remiss of their duties.
Some of elite of the country voiced their discontent about the upcoming 11th Parliamentary election.
They declared ‘We are in favor of a good election,’ ‘People are flocking to the election field. Voting centers are for voters.’
A Dhaka University professor Geeti Ara Nasrin, a Jahangirnagar University Professor of Department of Economics Anu Mohammad,
Supreme Court advocates Dr Shahdin Malik and Barrister Sara Hossain among others were present at the press conference. Besides, a section of Civil Society, including Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) and SHUJAN, expressed grave concern over “mass arrest” of leaders and activists of opposition parties centring political programmes across the country.
BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that over 2,200 leaders and activists of BNP were detained recently after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s promise of “no more political arrests”.
On the other hand Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Mohammad Javed Patwary said the law and order situation ahead of the 11th national election is better than ever before.
