UNB, Dhaka :
Happy at the rapid fall in poverty rate, Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Saturday said there will be no abject poverty in Bangladesh after 2018.
“Our main target is to eliminate extreme poverty from Bangladesh by 2018,” he said while addressing a press briefing ahead of the South-South and Triangular Cooperation meeting scheduled for May 17-18 at Sonargaon Hotel.
Noting that now the poverty rate is 24 percent in Bangladesh, Muhith said
the rate will come down to 11 percent in 2019. “It’s expected that there’ll be no visible poverty in the country once its rate slides down to 11 percent.” Besides, the state will take the responsibility of those who are lame, blind and sick, he added.
The Finance Minister attributed the poverty and the country’s bad condition to the exploitative policy of Pakistan, saying if there had been mutual sharing between Pakistan and Bangladesh, there would have been no poverty in Bangladesh.
He said, the South-South and Triangular Cooperation meeting will play a vital role in developing economic investment and information technology in the country.
