Md Abdur Rahim :
Family affection is very strong in the South Asian countries especially in Bangladesh. Bangladesh has much reputation for extreme family ties, love and affection. Love or affection between parents and children is tremendously observed in our country. Such affection obligates the parents to take affliction of looking after the children and in the same way, the children to obey the parents. So, to maintain the tie of love and affection in the families, the parents have to undergo much trouble and thus they ensure their dedication to the welfare of their children. When a son or daughter goes outside the house for study, the parents’ eyes become filled with tears. They have to control themselves in much difficulty. Their children also break down taking leave of their parents. In this case, both the parents and children often make communication to know each other’s
condition.
The parents always remain anxious thinking about their children’s safety and soundness. They also remain solicitous for the return of their children. The children studying or working far from the house or country extremely yearn for the love of their parents. These are the common features of the family affection and ties of our society. But in the recent years, some sporadic but gruesome murders like patricide and matricide have disquieted and worried the other parents of the country.
The occurrence of killing one’s father and mother simultaneously is very rare. These two parenticides were committed in our county by Oishee Rahman and Saidur Rahman last year and this year respectively. Before going to focus on these two sensational patricides and matricides, I would like to point out other killings by the near and dear ones.
Uxoricide, mariticide, fratricide, sororicide and filicide or infanticide is committed at home and abroad for various reasons. Oxoricide means the crime of killing one’s wife or a man who is guilty of this crime while mariticide means killing one’s husband. Both types of killings may occur for suspicion, mutual disbelief and misunderstanding. Fratricide means killing one’s brother or sister and sororicide means killing one’s sister. Such killings are mainly committed due to conflict over the
property right in our country.
Filicide or infanticide means killing one’s sons or daughter. Such killings are held in a family due to the conflict between the husband and wife, for extreme poverty or
for insane mental condition
of the father and mother.
But what makes the sons and daughters kill their father and mother? Is it for property, land, conflict or for disbelief? The two aforementioned patricides and matricides by Oishee Rahman (Dhaka) and Saidur Rahman (Manikgonj) reveal the fact that they killed their parents by being aberrant for drug addiction. Oishee used to take drugs regularly and her aberrant drug addicted friends led her to destruction from where she could not rectify herself in spite of her parents’ endless endeavours. This was the first time in our country that a daughter had killed or got killed her parents who tried to prevent her from taking drugs.
The second parenticide took place in Manikognj on October 19, 2014 by another aberrant boy named Saidur Rahman who was also drug addicted. According to the report published in different dailies, Saidur killed his father and mother as they refused
to provide him with money
to buy drugs.
These two occurrences must cause panic among the parents whose dear children are drug addicted. It is also appalling to other parents. How can a son or a daughter kill his/her father and mother tearing all the ties of family affection? Boys and girls may commit some common offences like picking a quarrel with others, passing time outside the house, vandalizing public property etc.
Though these activities are not acceptable, we are accustomed to seeing them. But when a boy or a girl becomes drug addicted, he or she gradually becomes abnormal and ultimately goes stray losing conscience and the sense of right and wrong.
A drug addict firstly ruins himself and then the whole family. We have advanced much in the fields of education and economy. We have become self-sufficient in food also. Our people are not infected with AIDS or Ebola Virus. But a great demon like drug addiction is engulfing the young generation of the country. If we fail to control it, our all achievements will end in smoke.
The parents must notice their children’s behaviour, their movements or where they go and with whom they make friendship. Besides, the parents must manage time to share the children’s likes, dislikes and ideas about different things.n
