Overcoming their six-year title drought, Dhaka Abahani Limited clinched the Walton 27th Federation Cup Football crown beating spirited Arambagh KS by 1-0 goal in the final at Bangabandhu National Stadium on Monday.
English forward Lee Tuck scored the match-winning goal for popular sky-blue Dhanmondi outfit in the 11th minute by a curved left footer from top of the box off a Nabib Newaz Jibon’s square pass.
With the day’s feat, Abahani Limited not only clinched the Federation Cup title for the 9th time, but also took sweet revenge of their 0-1 goal defeat against Arambagh in the league opener on June 10. Arambagh KS, which remained unbeaten in the last eight matches-four in the Independence Cup and four in the Federation Cup Football-conceded the first defeat and finished runners-up for the 3rd time in the meet after 1997 and 2001.
Champions Abahani Limited received Tk 5 lakh, while runners-up Arambagh KS got Tk 3 lakh as prize money in addition to trophies. Lee Tuck of Abahani Limited was adjudged the best player of the final.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Youth and Sports Ministry Zahid Ahsan Russell, BFF Senior Vice President Abdus Salam Murshedy and BFF Vice President Kazi Nabil Ahmed, MP, distributed the champions and runners-up trophies and prize money.
Abahani’s Nigerian forward Sunday Chizoba was adjudged the most valuable player of the tournament while another Nigerian player, Kester Akon of Arambagh KS, named as highest scorer of the tournament. Both of them were awarded with cash prize money of Tk 25,000 and a LED TV from Walton.
In the day’s final, Abahani came close to a strike in the 9th minute, but Arambagh goalie Mitul Hasan saved his castle punching out a header of Abahani winger Jewel Rana, off a Lee Tuck cross. Arambagh made a chance to equalise the margin in the 50th minute but forward Jafar Iqbal shot went straight to Abahani goalie Shahidul Alam Sohel, who fisted the ball away.
In the 58th minute, a header of Arambagh forward Kester Akon was brilliantly saved by Abahani custodian Sohel diving to the right.
Arambagh made a good attempt in the 60th minute when Kester Akon sending a through pass to Yoko Samnick, who shot over the cross bar with Abahani goalie Sohel alone under the bar.
