UNB, Dhaka :
A last-minute goal by Rubel Miya enabled holders Dhaka Abahani Limited to manage a 1-0 goal victory over their arch-rivals Dhaka Mohammedan SC in a prestige battle of the Saif Power Battery 10th Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) football at the floodlit Bangabandhu National Stadium here on Monday.
With the day’s victory, the sky-blue Dhanmondi outfit, Abahani Ltd, not only returned to the winning run after their shocking 0-1 goal defeat against lowly Farashganj SC in their last match, but also forced old horse Dhaka Mohammedan SC to concede 3rd defeat in a row.
Rubel scored the match winner in the stoppage time after 90 minutes by a right footed shot from the danger zone after receiving a pass from Nabib Newaz Ziban, who connected a header of Nigerian forward Emeka Darlington from the right wing (1-0).
Abahani forward Rubel Miya’s left footer from the top of the six-yard box off a cross of forward Saad Uddin from the left side went out edging the crosspiece in the 54th minute.
In the 61st minute, Abahani’s Ghanaian defender Samad Yusuf took a 35-yard long powerful shot which went edging the crosspiece.
Mohammedan goalie-cum-captain Shahidul Alam denied two successive close headers as he fisted Abahani’s Nigerian forward Emeka Darlington’s header in the 69th and 71st minute, both from the box.
Mohammedan resorted to a defensive strategy almost all the 2nd half of the match and successfully kept their post intact till the scheduled 90 minutes.
Abahani started a positive game for goal from the very beginning with attacks and counter-attacks till 25 minutes but Mohammedan’s doughty defending wall tackled well all those attempts.
The game got pretty colours for the next 10 minutes with some fruitless attacks and quick counter-attacks from both sides.
Abahani got a close chance in the 37th minute as Emeka Darlington’s header from the box went out edging the crosspiece off a right footed cross of midfielder Emon Mahmud from right flank.
With this win, defending champions Dhaka Abahani collected six points from three matches as they started their campaign with a 3-2 victory against Saif Sporting Club before conceding a solitary goal defeat against Farashganj Sporting Club in the 2nd match.
Bottom-run Mohammedan remained pointless with three successive losses in the 12-team league.
