Aamar Bangladesh (AB) Party on Friday holds a protest meeting and demonstration in the capital, over gross human rights violations carried out by the country’s law enforcement agencies with a silent approval from the regime as well as unprecedented price hike.

Solaiman Chowdhury, Convenor of the party and former chairman of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), criticised the government for their out-of-control corruption, money laundering, up to fifty percent price hike of fuel, albeit unnecessary. BPC profited over $4.8 billion between 2015-21, yet it could not withhold the storm for last six months of downfall.

Mojibur Rahman Monju, Member Secretary of the Party, demanded this illegal and undemocratic government to step down immediately and hand over the power to a neutral interim/caretaker government. This government has no legitimacy to rule over 180 million people of the country.

Professor Minar, Joint Convenor of the party, had raised the issue of inflation, up to 19% per year, causing unbearable pain and suffering to the working and lower middle class families who had already suffered the worst during the pandemic years. Over 100 million people cannot afford a basic meal a day, let along to seek regular health care service.

Asaduzzaman Fuaad, a barrister-at-law, condemned the secret detention centre run by various law enforcement agencies across the country which goes against the very essence of our proclamation of independence and fundamental rights enshrined in our constitution. An Independent Commission under the supervision of UNHRC must be formed to investigate the crossfires, enforced disappearances and other inhumane and degrading treatment of prisoners in Ainaghor, a torture cell at the heart of the capital, he demanded.

The procession walked through the streets from AB Square and ended in front of the National Press Club.
