NEWSPAPERS reported that 12th-grader student of Dhaka’s Banophool Adibashi Green Heart College Shahriar Alam Akash, 19, was injured after jumping off a three-story building on Monday as his teacher allegedly hurled abusive words at him and his parents for not doing well in an examination. Akash, who suffered severe injuries in the head, was undergoing treatment at National Institute of Neuroscience and Hospital at Agargaon. His classmates vandalised several teachers’ rooms and a microbus of the college as the news spread. The agitating students also brought out a protest rally outside the campus.
It’s undoubtedly a disturbing news that a college student tried to commit suicide for insulting him and also his parents. We are glad the student did not misbehave with the teacher by way of retaliation. It should have been other way round. The parents who pay the teacher’s salary should have held the teacher accountable for their son doing bad academically. The teacher is liable to an explanation.
The teachers can surely advise the parents how to prepare their children for better learning. As report in the press goes he insulted the parents shifting his own responsibility. He is by training a teacher and he should know how to deal with the situation psychologically.
Like all other ministries, the ministry of education is in charge of an incompetent minister. She does not know her job. It is the responsibility of education ministry to watch how the schools and colleges being run and how the atmosphere is maintained for the students. So, mismanagement in educational institutions is nothing new.
To say something in his favour, at least as a teacher, he has shown concern for the education of the student. The mistake he made was his failure to understand the sensitivity of the boy.
We know we have built a cruel and brutal society. But the teachers should be more eager to conduct soberly as good examples for the younger generation.
