A slow start for new releases

With three new films vying for exhibition, who will finally take the cake in the first weekend?

Among the many small budget releases, the three films that take centre stage this week are Main Aur Charles, Guddu Ki Gun and Titli. Shaandaar has also completed its first week of shows.
The crime drama Main Aur Charles is the most mainstream of the lot and has opened to 8 per cent occupancies in the early shows.
But the film has been garnering good reviews and that should propel it to a possible figure of Rs 1.50 crore at the end of the first day.
The adult comedy Guddu Ki Gun has notched 5 per cent occupancies in the early shows and may just cross the Rs 50 lakh barrier at the end of the first day, but not without a fight.
Despite the rave reviews both domestically and internationally, Titli struggled to touch a 5 per cent occupancy figure in the early shows, owing to a limited number of screens allotted for exhibition.
If the word of mouth is trending positively, the film could earn close to Rs 50 lakhs by the close of the day.
But the big disappointment here is Shaandaar. The film tanked over the weekend and there was no scope for revival considering the less than favourable reviews coming its way.
After notching a weekend total of Rs 33.51 crore, collections dropped heavily by a margin of 80 per cent on Monday with a mere Rs 2 crore in the till.
The sinking trend continued through the week with figures to the tune of Rs 1.75 crore on Tuesday, Rs 1.40 crore on Wednesday and Rs 1.20 crore on Thursday. Earning Rs 39.86 crore at the end of seven days, the chances of the collections touching the 50-crore mark look bleak.
The film has done good business in the overseas market, with Rs 14.65 crore in earnings.
The worldwide total for Shaandaar stands at Rs 54.51 crore, but the film has pretty much lost its fizz at the domestic box-office.
