Write India author of the month Nikita Singh’s eleventh book Letters To My Ex was launched on Saturday, February 17, at an event in New Delhi by Vinita Dawra Nangia, Associate Editor, The Times of India and Director, Write India.
The event, which took place at Om Book Shop in DLF Place, Saket, New Delhi, provided a perfect setting to the release of Write India Author of the Month for February Nikita Singh’s new romance title with a pretty backdrop of colourful books.
Published by HarperCollins, the book Letters To My Ex was launched by Vinita Nangia, who said she had the privilege of reading the book before the release, and that she loved it.
The book is Nikita’s 11th book, which deals with heartbreak and takes a break from the traditional love story format she has tried in her earlier novels. The novel follows a couple who has recently split. The reader only gets to learn their full story from several exchanges of letters. Though the title is Letters To My Ex , the book is more than a monotonous series of letters. There are also e-mails exchanges, text message conversations and other forms of text and communication which come together to tell us about the relationship.
Nikita claims the book isn’t autobiographical, though she does feel everything she writes and lives in the mind of her characters. However, she admitted that the protagonist was inspired by conversations with a close friend. Nikita had realized after completing the book that the protagonist was a lot like her friend, although the love story was entirely based on her imagination.
As Nikita expalined how this book could be an autobographical experience for anyone reading it, Vinita shared her admiration for today’s young generation of writers. She said, “That’s what I like about this generation. They openly say it’s autobiographical for everyone. They expect you to have fallen in love and out of it too. Few years back no one would’ve imagined anyone saying such a thing.”
Both Write India mentors, Nikita and Vinita spoke of love and how it has evolved over time with its changing influences on the romance novel. Vinita Nangia, a revered relationship expert, said she admires how “today’s generation looks at romance, partners like another job. If one is not worth it, the option of another one is always there. It’s a process of experimentation”. Nikita admitted some of her perspectives about ‘love forever’ have changed and she sometimes rethinks about the title of her previous bestselling book, If It’s Not Forever, It’s Not Love .
The two authors indulged in a discussion about the new generation of authors and how TOI Write India makes an excellent platform for them. “It gives you a platform to kick-start your career as a writer and it’s such a great initiative I just had to be a part of it,” gushed Nikita. Vinita also probed Nikita to gave a ‘cheat-sheet’ to the Write India participants so that they get an idea as to which story will touch Nikita’s heart.
Nikita Singh is Write India ‘Author of the Month’ for February and she advised those participating to have the plot sorted out before writing, “If they know what they’re doing and if they know where their story is going I think it’s going to show in their writing because their words will be more confident and I think that attracts me”. Nikita agreed that she likes well structured, plot heavy stories. n
