Staff Reporter :
After loosing party symbol, leaders of a faction of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) on Friday demanded review of the Election Commission’s decision.
They said, “This decision of the Election Commission is uncalled for, untimely and devoid of any sense of
responsibility”.
In a joint statement, JSd President Sharif Nurul Ambia and General Secretary Nazmul Haque Prodhan described the EC’s decision to award the party symbol to its rival faction led by Hasanul Haq Inu and Shirin Akhter as ‘discriminatory and against justice’ and demanded a review.
JaSoD had split into two factions over differences that cropped up at it national council on March 12.
The break-up became evident when executive president Moin Uddin Khan Badal, Ambia and Prodhan announced a parallel committee to that of Inu and Akhter. Each faction, claiming to be ‘real JaSoD’, had separately met with the EC on April 6, staking claim to the party symbol – ‘torch’.
On Wednesday, the EC recognised the Inu-led faction as the JaSoD ‘mainstream’, allowing them to retain the polls logo ‘torch’.
The statement, protesting against the EC decision, held that the constitutional body during the hearing had said that more data and information would be needed to decide the matter.
Moreover, the returning officers had been told to decide which faction was to be given the symbol in the ongoing Union Parishad elections. “Under the circumstances, the EC decision has, in effect, increased the schism within the JaSoD, something that does not fall with its jurisdiction,” the statement said. Ambia and Prodhan said the charges of several activities against ‘party charter and electoral rules’ on March 12 national council were not taken into account by the EC in making the decision.
They said the decision was ‘mysterious’ because the Commission ‘ignored’ their claim, despite knowing that three of the JaSoD MPs who got elected in the last two national elections were from the Ambia-Prodhan faction.
“The EC took a stance against fair trial and parliament rules and regulations by giving away the symbol to those who did not use it in the polls,” said the statement.
Inu and Akhter both had used the Awami League’s symbol ‘boat’ in the last parliamentary polls and were elected, it added.
