The 9th Summit of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) begins in Dhaka next month as experts viewed that the global event would open up opportunities of migrants from Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to open the three-day summit at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the city on December 10, foreign ministry sources said on Wednesday.
As many as 800 representatives from governments, international organizations, civil society and business including ministers from 150 countries are expected to attend the summit under the overarching theme “Migration that works for Sustainable Development for all: Towards a Transformative Migration Agenda”.
The government is taking allout preparations including ensuring fool-proof security for the guests ahead of the global summit. Renovation and other related works are going on in full swing in Bangabandhu International Conference Centre, the main venue of the summit.
Foreign ministry sources said that 15 ministers from different countries already confirmed their participation till yesterday when Dhaka expects that the remaining countries would make their confirmation by this month.
Apart from ministers of different countries, International Labour Organisation (ILO) Director General Guy Ryder, International Organisation of Migration (IOM) Director General William Lacy Swing and UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for International Migration Peter Sutherland and UN Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs Wu Hongbu will join the summit.
A delegation from the United States would also join the global summit, sources added.
Earlier, the foreign ministry held a diplomatic briefing at the State Guest House Padma on Monday on the upcoming summit where diplomats from various foreign missions stationed in Dhaka joined.
A two-day civil society programme will be held on December 8 and 9 and report of the programme will be submitted at the inauguration session of the summit.
The three-day summit will comprise plenary sessions, roundtables and open discussions on various aspects of migration.
At the end of the 9th GFMD Summit, Bangladesh would hand over chairmanship of the forum to Germany. The 10th Summit of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) is scheduled to be held in Berlin, the capital of Germany.
Earlier, the final Preparatory Meetings of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) under the Bangladesh Chairmanship were held in Geneva on October 20-21. Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque chaired the meetings.
