Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS) in an observation found that 98 per cent of passengers of Dhaka’s public transport are suffering from anarchy during Ramzan.
Most of them have to pay additional fare as the bus contractors are charging extra price from the passengers.
The BJKS, in a press release, disclosed their monitoring report on Saturday, which was made by observing 15 important areas in the capital.
It has been observed that 68 per cent of the passengers were forced to travel on running bus. By the name of sitting service they charge additional fare, whereas 36 per cent passengers were forced to journey by stand up, added the press release.
About harassment, the report said 93 per cent of the passengers do not know where and how to complain. However, 90 per cent of passengers believe that they do not complain because there is no remedy for complaint. The attention of the concerned authorities could not be drawn to resolve their sufferings.
Regarding CNG fares, the monitoring report said that CNG are running in the city with 100 per cent basis of contract deal. It is being collected around three to four times fare more than the meter. Around 93 per cent auto rickshaw drivers do not agree to go to the desired destination of passengers. When coincidentally it matches with the preferred destination of the drivers, they agree to go to the destination of the passengers.
It is said in the report that due to traffic congestion at the time of Iftar, ordinary people of the city are facing extreme suffering due to the public transport crisis. From around 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm, about 97 per cent of the bus-minibus traveled through the doors close as of the seating service. Buses are charging extra fares as determined by the company, rather than the government fixed fares.
Jatri Kallan Samity reports that motorbikes transported in the name of ride sharing have been added for the first time in public transport. It has been found throughout the city that instead of app, motorbikes carry passengers for three to four times the additional hike in oral contracts.
Members of the sub-committee of Bangladesh Jatri Kallan Samity observed the journey from the beginning of Ramzan to the passenger’s workplace. The report was made in the city’s Kamalapur, Magbazar, Shanir Akhra, Gulistan, Sayedabad, Jatrabari, Postagola, Shahbagh, Farmgate, Mirpur-10, Mohakhali, Agargaon, Dhanmondi, Banani and Baridhara.
