UNB, Dhaka :
Country’s 97 percent people have so far been brought under the sanitation coverage from 44 percent in 2003,
according to Local Government Division officials.
Although 57 percent of the country’s household use improved sanitation, while only 3 percent remain still out of sanitation coverage, they told the Inter-Country Working Group (ICWG) meeting of SACOSAN (South Asian Conference on Sanitation).
The Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives organised the two-day 7th Inter Country Working Group (ICWG) Meeting at city’s Sonargaon Hotel on Tuesday.
Speaking at the inaugural session, senior secretary of Local Government Division Monzur Hossain said Bangladesh has initiated a regional conference to find ways to overcome obstacles and accelerate progress with the realisation of the enormity of the sanitation challenges in the South Asian Region.
Bangladesh hosted the first SACOSAN in 2003 and will become the first again in hosting SACOSAN second time in January 2016.
To achieve 100 percent sanitation coverage in the South Asian Region, he said all countries have to face the challenges. “We’ve to emphasise research and development on low-cost but sustainable sanitation products linked with sanitation marketing and innovative solutions for environmentally sound sanitation systems.”
Monzur said, awareness should be raised at all levels to foster demand and build capacity for sanitation and hygiene promotions.
Chief Engineer of Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) Khaleda Ahsan and joint secretary of Local Government Division and Coordinator SACOSAN VI M Akram Al Hossain also spoke on the occasion.
