95 pc hike in gas price proposed

Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company moved a proposal seeking an average 95.09 percent increase in gas price for its consumers. The company also planned to increase its revenue collection by more than double.
Titas Gas, the largest gas distribution company having 62 percent market share with about 1.9 million customers mostly in Dhaka and Mymensingh regions, moved the proposal to the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), which the watchdog disclosed in its website recently.
As per the proposal of Titas Gas which commands gas distribution in Dhaka and its adjoining areas, the annual revenue collection will go up to Tk 21,379.89 crore from the existing Tk 10,959.12 crore though the price hike.
Although Titas Gas and other gas distribution companies submitted their proposals on March 30 this year, the BERC published their proposals recently.
The other gas distribution companies also submitted similar proposals
to the watchdog body which announced a schedule to hold public hearing on their proposals on August 7-18.
As per the proposal of Titas Gas, household gas price will be hiked by highest 140 percent where gas price will be raised to Tk 16.80 per unit from Tk 7.
The cost of single burner oven will to go up to Tk 1100 from the existing Tk 600 while the double burner Tk 1200 from the existing Tk 650 per month. The proposed hike is 83 and 85 percent respectively for single and double burner ovens.
The compress natural gas (CNG) gas price has been proposed to be raised by 83 percent to Tk 49.50 pere unit from the exiting Tk 27. In this case, the consumer will have to pay Tk 57.50 for per unit GNG in place of the current price of Tk 35 per unit.
The power plant’s gas price has been proposed at Tk 4.60 per unit (per cubic metre) from Tk 2.82 with 63 percent hike. The gas price for industries was proposed to be Tk 10.95 per unit instead of Tk 6.78 with 62 percent hike in price.
The commercial establishments’ gas price was sought to be raised by 72 percent to Tk 19.50 percent from the existing Tk 11.36 per unit.
The captive power plants’ gas price was proposed to be raised by 130 percent to Tk 19.26 from the current rate of Tk 11.36 per unit. The gas price for fertilizer factories was proposed to be set at Tk 4.41 per unit from Tk 2.82 with a 71 percent hike in price.
As per the revenue collection plan, Titas Gas will collect Tk 4,095.64 crore from household customers against the present collection of Tk 1706.52 crore with a rise of 139.99 percent in target.
