A total of 929 people have died with Covid-19 like symptoms in Bangladesh since March 8, according to a report.
A UNDP funded research facility, Bangladesh Peace Observatory (BPO), housed at the Centre for Genocide Studies of Dhaka University published the report on Tuesday based on newspaper reports of deaths showing Covid-19 symptoms.
Of the deceased, 210 were from Dhaka division, 167 from Chittagong division, 110 from Khulna division, 87 from Rajshahi division, 84 from Barisal division, 66 from Sylhet division, and 65 from Rangpur division.
However, officially, Bangladesh has recorded a total of 250 deaths due to Covid-19 since the first three cases reported on March 8.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) recorded 11 fresh deaths and 969 new cases from the virus on Tuesday.
The total number of officially confirmed coronavirus cases on Tuesday also surpassed the 16,000-mark, climbing to 16,660, including the new cases recorded in the last 24 hours.
Prof ABM Abdullah, personal doctor of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said that on March 8, the first three patients were declared Covid-19 positive. Now, diagnosis has increased which is why patients have also increased. But this is not the real picture. “The figures come based on tests. The number of infected people is more than the figures we have. If testing increases, the numbers will also increase,” he added.
