9,000 tons of pulses likely to be produced in Rangpur

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has fixed a target of producing 9,013 tonnes of pulses on 7,976 hectares of land during the current Rabi season in Rangpur region.
“The farmers have been sowing pulse seed in full swing now to increase production of the crop for meeting nutritional demand of the population by locally produced ones,” said Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam. According to the DAE sources, the farmers have already cultivated pulses on 4,025 hectares of land or 50.46 per cent of the fixed target of farming the crop in the region where the tender plants are growing amid favourable climatic conditions.
The DAE, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation, other related organisations and NGOs are assisting the farmers to achieve the fixed pulse farming target.
The government has taken special steps, including providing agri-loans at lower interest rate, to enhance production of pulses by encouraging the farmers in bringing more land under cultivation of the crop. The fixed target include production of 2,700 tonnes of lentil from 2,298 hectares of land, 73 tonnes gram from 70 hectares, 4,579 tonnes ‘Mashkalai’ from 4,147 hectares, 187 tonnes of mungbean (winter) from 162 hectares, 1,307 tonnes of ‘Khesari’ from 1,148 hectares, 40 tonnes cowpea from 37 hectares and 127 tonnes of ‘Arhar’ from 114 hectares of land. Deputy Director of the DAE SM Ashraf Ali here told BSS that there was a tremendous potential to increase pulse production in the region utilising latest technology, proper crop diversification and land management.
“The DAE, other related organisations and banks have been providing training, quality seed, latest technologies, inputs and agri-loans to the farmers to make the intensive pulse farming programme successful this season,” he said.
Regional Additional Director of the DAE Shah Alam predicted a bumper production of pulses this season mentioning that the country had brighter prospect of enhancing output of pulses through increasing its cultivation.

This year the farmers have put their best effort to cultivate early potato on their lands with the hope to attain satisfactory yield of the popular vegetable. The cultivators are also expecting good profit from its sale after early harvest.Sources said farmers have been earning remarkable profit through farming different varieties of early vegetable including potato that encouraged many farmers to bring more lands under early potato farming.
