9 teams start monitoring SCC electioneering process

Ten teams led by executive magistrates have started working here to monitor the electioneering process in Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) polls, observing the election code of conducts is being maintained or not.
With direction of district magistrate, the teams have been working in all 30 wards to ensure a proper and congenial atmosphere for election since Sunday last.
District Magistrate office sources said three councilor candidates were fined Taka 500 each and another Taka 1,000 on charge of violating election code of conducts yesterday.
Simultaneously, a high-powered team Election Commission will start working here to resist any violation of election code of conducts from tomorrow.
Candidates for both mayoral and ward councilors along with their workers and supporters are passing busy days with campaigning in favour of them.
The candidates are seen meeting voters irrespective of age, sex, creed and caste with posters and leaflets to enhance support for them from early morning to midnight.
Flanked by large number of party leaders and workers, the mayoral contestants are also seen meeting voters seeking their support throughout the day.
A total of 196 candidates are vying in the upcoming SCC election scheduled to be held on July 30. Of candidates, Seven for mayor, 127 for general councilors and 62 for reserved seats for women councilors are contesting.
Returning Officer Md Alimuzzaman said BNP-backed candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury was given ‘sheaf of paddy’ while Awami League nominated mayoral candidate Badar Uddin Kamran got ‘boat’ symbol. Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, an individual candidate got ‘wall clock’ while BNP’s revel candidate Badruzzaman Selim got ‘Bus’, Islami Andolan Bangladesh backed candidate Prof Dr Moazzem got ‘hand fan’, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) backed candidate Abu Zafar got ‘ladder’ and individual candidate Ehsanul Haq Taher got ‘deer’ symbol.
He said there are 3,21,732 voters including 1,50,288 female voters who will exercise their right of franchise at 134 centers to elect one mayor, 27 general councilors and 9 women councilors in reserved seats in the upcoming election.
