UNB, Sangsad :
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Sunday told Parliament that nine under-construction power plants with the capacity of some 2,000 megawatts will go into operation within 2017.
The nine power plants are now being implemented in both public sector and private sectors, he said replying to a tabled starred question from Jatiya Party MP Nurul Islam Omar (Bogra-6).
The junior minister said 8,500-9,500 megawatts of electricity are being generated on average a day to meet the country’s demand. In reply to another starred question from Jatiya Party MP Salim Uddin (Sylhet), Nasrul said the capacity of renewable power generation is some 450 megawatts a day in the country. Of the 450 megawatts, solar power are 212 megawatts, wind power is 2.9 megawatts, biogas 5 megawatts and hydropower 230 megawatts, the junior minister said. Replying to a starred question from Awami League MP Habibur Rahman Mollah (Dhaka-5), the state minister blamed the lack of awareness for gas cylinder blast in the house.
“Such accidents might be occurred in houses generally for lack of awareness. But low standard of cylinder and
transportation faults also cause accidents in some cases,” Nasrul Hamid said.
The Explosives Department and agencies concerned have been working to seize faulty and low standard cylinders alongside raising public awareness to prevent cylinder blast, he added.
The government is working to form a monitoring cell to watch the standard of cylinder as many companies started the business with the rise of demand of gas cylinder for domestic use in the country, he added.
