The list of banned organisations is getting longer. The government is close to adding at least nine more extremist outfits to a list that already has five, said State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Kamal.
The minister, however, declined to reveal the names just yet while speaking to bdnews24.com on Tuesday.
“I can’t tell you the names now. But they would be discussed in Wednesday’s (Apr 9) meeting,” said Kamal, who heads the national counter-terrorism committee, formed in 2009.
It’s last meeting was held in June 2013. Several members of the committee,
preferring anonymity, told bdnews24.com that ‘Jayes-e-Mohammad’, ‘Hizbul Mujahideen’, ‘Kalema-e-Jamaat’, ‘Ansarullah Bangla Team’ and ‘Hizbul Mahadee’ were among those to face ban.
Hizbul Mahadee founder Lutfur Rahman Faruki along with five of his followers was recently killed at his home in Dhaka’s Gopibagh neighbourhood.
The state minister told bdnews24.com that the security agencies were keeping a close watch on 24 other groups, including Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Shibir is the student affiliate of the Jamaat-e-Islami.
The government has already outlawed Hizbut Tahrir, Shahadat-e-al Hikma, Jam’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Harkatul Jihad al Islami Bangladesh (HuJi) and Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB) for their militant activities.
Meanwhile, law enforces would like to recommend at least one more name for inclusion in the list.
“RAB has found the activities of the ‘Hizbut Tawheed’ as being harmful. We will recommend their banning,” Additional Director of RAB Ziaul Ahsan told bdnews24.com.
