At least eight people were killed and several others injured in separate road accidents in three districts on Thursday while the country went into holiday mode on Eid-ul-Azha amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
In Gopalganj, three members of a family were killed after a private car crashed into the railing of a railway flyover on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway in Bhatiapara area of Kashiani upazila in Gopalganj in the morning.
The deceased were identified as Jiaul Haque, 55, his son Embadul Haque, 25, of Dighalia in Khulna and his brother-in-law Sajjad Molla, 35, of Narail.
Confirming their identities, Md Ataur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bhanga Highway police station, said the three were killed on the spot at around 4am while two others injured.
The accident took place when Singapore expatriate Emdadul Haque was going home with his father and sister’s husband by a rented private car from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, OC added. The injured were taken to Gopalganj General Hospital, the OC said.
The bodies were handed over to their relatives, he added.

In the port city, a probationary sub inspector – Ahesanul Hoque , 27, from Ukhia upazila of Cox’s Bazar — was killed as a passenger bus rammed into his motorbike on Mariners’ Road around 11:15am, said Mohammad Mohsin, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station.
In Lohagara upazila, two passengers of a Chittagong-bound bus were killed and 10 others injured as the bus collided head on with a truck in front of Bara Awliya Degree College around 7:30am, said Yasir Arafat, OC of Dohazari Highway police station.
The deceased were identified as Md Shawkat ,27, from Chandanaish of Chittagong, and Mostafizur Rahman, 27, from Jhalakathi, he said.
The injured passengers were given primary treatment in Lohagara upazila Health Complex, he said.
In Gaibandha, a man and his son were killed in a road accident in Gaibandha’s Gobindaganj upazila. The deceased were Md Achir Uddin, 55, and his son Md. Zobayer Hossain, 14, residents of the Bogdoha colony area of the upazila.
The accident occurred at Tarof Kamal Shiyalgara area on the Gobindaganj- Dinajpur regional highway around 10am.
Quoting witnesses, Md Afzal Hossain, inspector (investigation) of Gobindaganj police station, said, “Achir was returning home after picking up his son from a Madrasa hostel in Bogra in the morning. However, their motorcycle collided with a microbus near Tarapkamal area.”
“Locals rushed them to the Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced them dead.”
