At least 12 people, including nine Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists and three journalists, have been injured in separate attacks by some Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men on Monday on Dhaka University (DU) campus.
The injured journalists are Anisur Rahman of Students Journal, Rahatul Islam Rafee of Dainik Pratidiner Bangladesh, Afsar Munna of Dainik Business Bangladesh.
The BCL men attacked on them when they were taking photograph of the incident.
Khorshed Alam Sohel, who contested in the Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) polls for the Assistant General Secretary post, was also severely injured in the attack carried out around 12pm on Monday.
According to the witnesses, newly-elected General Secretary of Central JCD Iqbal Hossain Shaymal, accompanied by some other activists, went to Hakim Chattar on the campus in the afternoon but BCL DU unit President Sanjit Chandra Das asked them to immediately leave the campus.
As the JCD activists reached Shoparjito Shadhinota premises, some BCL activists, wielding rods and sticks, swopped on them, leaving nine JCD activists injured.
The injured are Kamrul, Firoz, Shahin, Masum, Mahbub Shahin, Fahim, Shajal and Nayan.
They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Among them, Shohel and Kamrul are in critical condition, JCD President Fazlur Rahman Khokon claimed.
Witnesses said that BCL Sir AF Rahman hall unit Vice-President Hossain Mahmud Apel, Deputy Office Secretary of Kabi Jashim Uddin Hall unit Mohsin Alam Talukdar, Surya Sen Hall Joint Secretary Shariful Islam Shapu, Bijoy Ekattor Hall unit Vice President Abdullah Al Fariyal, Raisul Islam and others are the attacker.
Expressing sorrow over the attack, BCL DU unit President Sanjit Chandra Das claimed some “over-enthusiastic” BCL activists might have carried out the attack.
“Every organisation has their right to conduct their political activities on the campus through a democratic system,” he said, adding that they would identify the attackers soon and will take organsational action in this regard.”
