The roof of the under-construction main gate of the Central Jail at Keraniganj collapsed reportedly for use of sub-standard materials on the outskirts of Dhaka on Sunday morning, leaving nine construction workers injured.
The injured are Ibrahim Mia, 40, Farul Hossain, 25, Abdur Razzak, 28, Sirajul Islam alias Selim, 35, Mainuddin Mia, 22, Delwar, 40, Rabiul Islam alias Ripon, 32, Harun Ar Rashid, 50, and Sohrab, 40.
They were taken to Sir Salimullah Medical College & Mitford Hospital, said South Keraniganj Police Station Officer in-Charge (OC) Md Monirul Islam.
Witnesses said, workers were injured with the fall of the ceiling of the jail’s main gate suddenly around 9:00am. Getting information, the fire service personnel rushed to the spot and rescued them.
Seeking anonymity, one of the locals, alleged that the roof collapsed due to use of sub-standard materials (bricks, cement and sands) in the construction. Even the used bamboos and woods were not qualitiful and sufficient to hold the roof properly.
It collapsed just within seven days of construction work, he said.
Engineer Md Kawsar, Caretaker of the Messer’s Mamotaj Engineering Ltd owned by Md Roni, told the media that they used high quality and sustainable materials in the construction site just a week ago.
We are investigating the reason of the gate-collapse, he said. Iqbal Kabir Chowdhury, Jail Super of the Central Jail, said that they would take action against the culprits after getting the probe report.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated this newly constructed jail in Keraniganj on April 10, 2016.
