9 cr citizens to get smart voter ID

The government is going to launch around nine crore laminated smart national identity (NID) system with new multi-use ‘BD smart card’ for Bangladeshi citizen this year to resist forgery of the identity card and containing all the necessary information database of a particular person in it.
With the financial support from the World Bank, the Identification System for Enhanced Access to Services (IDEA) project is implementing the programme with a cost of Taka 800 crore.
Detailed information of a voter with photograph would be included in the new cards and 25 types of security features would be ensured to prevent possible forgery.
The existing laminated NID cards are printed on papers and can be easily forged. The law enforcers have so far arrested several people in connection with doctoring the NID cards.
Brigadier General Sultanuzzaman Md Saleh Uddin, project director of IDEA told BSS yesterday that “around nine crore people will get smart ID from August, this year.”
“Primarily, we have signed an agreement with the French company on January 2015 to produce the smart ID cards. The rest of the voters will get the cards in phases,” said Brig Gen Saleh Uddin, also a director general of the EC’s NID wing. The production of smart ID cards is expected to start by June 30, this year, said the official. “Inception of such smart ID will help to establish a secure and reliable system in Bangladesh for efficient, inclusive and transparent service delivery”, said IDEA high official.

This smart card’s micro chip record particular information and data storage for correct quire or identify. A smart card generally manufacture by plastic or polyvinyl chloride, said EC official.
