Nine cops, including two Assistant Commissioners (ACs), were interrogated by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday in connection with the embezzlement of 165 gold bars seized from the city’s Banasree area in March this year.
ACC Deputy Director Jatan Kumar Roy questioned them between 10:00am and 2:00pm at his Segunbagicha head office. However, the outcome of the interrogation could not be known immediately.
Those who were interrogated yesterday are Jewel Rana, Assistant Commissioner of Motijheel Zone and Mainul Islam, Assistant Commissioner of Demra Zone, Inspector Abul Khayer Matobbar, Motijheel Police Station’s Sub-Inspector Abul Bashar Mia, Nayek M Sakhawat Hossain, Constables AK Azad, M Abul Hasan, M Saiful Alam and Sree Nayan Kumar.
Earlier, the Commission summoned 11 cops to appear before it in this connection. Of them, nine appeared but two did not comply with it.
The Commission received allegation that the ACs lobbied for releasing the seized bars from the Rampura Police Station. For which the alleged smugglers dared to come to the police station getting the seized goods back.
The ACC also summoned and interrogated the other seven policemen having complaint that they had link to the crimes.
On March 13, a gang of smugglers ran away leaving a private car with 235 gold bars inside it at Banasree as a patrol police team chased them being informed about the gold.
The police seized the car and the gold bars. But they showed 70 bars only and the car in record book, embezzling 165.
When the news of the embezzlement was brought to light by media, the Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Rampura Police Station’s Sub-Inspector Manjurul Islam, constables Wahiduzzaman and Akash Chowdhury, their source Mahfuz Alam Rony and driver of a police-carrying vehicle Sojib Sikder on March 31.
The ACC filed a case against them with Rampura Police Station on April 7 and interrogated them on May 14.
Meanwhile, the Commission recorded statements of more than 40 people in this connection.
